WashU's Bear Beginnings: New Student Fall Orientation, August 2019

Welcome to campus!

Washington University will be introducing a nine-day orientation schedule before classes begin in the Fall of 2019. The university is committed to making this a meaningful time for all incoming students, including students who are Shabbat observant. As such, there are many things to be aware of so that you may participate in orientation while also practicing your Shabbat observance. As this is a new orientation system, we advise you to plan ahead and fill out any necessary forms, giving WashU and Chabad as much time to prepare for you as possible.

Things to take note of:

  1. Washington University will be offering a Friday move-in opportunity at no charge to accommodate Shabbat observant students. In order to take advantage of this, you should:

    1. Book tickets arriving in St. Louis and on campus before 4 PM on Friday, August 16th, 2019.

    2. For families wishing to stay for the family elements of orientation, plan to be on campus until Sunday at noon.

    3. To request a Friday move-in, fill out this form before August 1st.

  2. For early move in support from the campus community, please let us know by emailing info@chabadwashu.org  what time you will be arriving on campus on Friday so that we:

    1. Can organize to help you unload your stuff and move it to your room.

    2. Can direct you to the Residential Life (ResLife) Office to check-in and pick up your Shabbat key (if applicable).

  1. Shabbat keys are offered for all on-campus housing. To request a Shabbat key, please click here by August 8th, one week before your move-in.

  1. The Kosher kitchen (located in the Bear’s Den [affectionately known as BD]) will be open during the week of orientation but not on Friday, August 16th before move-in officially begins.

    1. Kosher lunch for Friday, August 16th is by pre-order only and will be delivered by Kohns Kosher to Chabad for you to pick up. Please click here to order.

  1. Shabbat at WashU: Chabad (and perhaps Hillel) will be hosting services and Shabbat meals for the move in weekend. August 16-17.  Please RSVP to www.chabadwashu.org/shabbat. Chabad-offered meals and services are at no cost to  the extended Washington University community but we rely on donations www.chabadwashu.org/donate.

    1. Friday night services will be at 6:30 PM on Friday 8/16. (Candle lighting is at 7:37 PM.)

    2. Shabbat dinner will start at 7:30 PM

    3. Shabbat morning services will be at 9:45 AM

    4. Shabbat lunch will be at 12:30 PM

    5. Shaleshudis will be at 5:30 PM to enable participation in Convocation.

  1. Immersive experiences are offered throughout the second weekend of orientation, Thursday, August 22- Saturday, August 24. The best way to be involved in these experiences is to:

    1. Choose the on-campus experiences when prompted on the WashU Pathway. Each on-campus experience will provide Kosher food and accommodations as necessary for Shabbat observant students.

    2. Avoid off-campus experiences as all off-campus experiences are scheduled to travel on Shabbat by returning to the WashU campus on Saturday.

  1. Students: Please join the Facebook group WashJew 2023 for updates on programming.

  2. Students and parents: Please sign up for the Chabad email list by clicking here.

We look forward to welcoming you to our wonderful WashU community!
